Overview

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to work in the United States for up to 12 months in a position directly related to their field of study. It is the critical bridge between graduation and H-1B sponsorship for most Indian students.

For Indians Moving From India

OPT is only available after you are already enrolled in a U.S. school on an F-1 visa. Plan your OPT application timeline during your final academic year — applications must be submitted within 90 days before or 60 days after your program end date.

For Indians Already in the US

Most students save their full 12 months for post-completion use to maximize job-market time. Apply through your DSO and receive an EAD card from USCIS before beginning work. USCIS processing can take several months, so apply as early as the 90-day window allows.

Key Information

OPT can be used either before graduation (pre-completion) or after (post-completion). Work must be directly related to your major field of study. You must report your employer to your DSO within 10 days of starting or changing jobs.
