Canadian Citizenship for PRs: Physical Presence, Language Test, and Oath

Summary

Canadian citizenship grants the right to vote, hold a Canadian passport, and remain in Canada without a residency obligation. Indian PRs can apply after meeting physical presence requirements, passing a language test, and passing a citizenship knowledge test.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Hold valid Permanent Resident status with no conditions
  • Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the last 5 years
  • Meet language requirements: adequate English or French (CLB 4 minimum)
  • Have filed Canadian income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period
  • Not be subject to a removal order or have certain criminal convictions

Tracking Physical Presence

Days outside Canada are not counted toward the 1,095-day requirement. Keep a detailed travel log with passport entry/exit stamps. Use IRCC's physical presence calculator tool before applying to confirm eligibility. Partial days on entry to Canada count as full days.

The Citizenship Test

Adults aged 18–54 must pass a 20-question multiple-choice test based on the 'Discover Canada' study guide. Topics include Canadian history, government, rights and responsibilities, and geography. The test is available in English or French.

OCI Card and Dual Citizenship Note

India does not allow dual citizenship. Upon taking the Canadian oath of citizenship, you must surrender your Indian passport. You may apply for an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, which gives you lifelong visa-free travel to India and other privileges, but it is not citizenship.

Common Mistakes Indians Make

  • Not maintaining travel records and underestimating days abroad.
  • Applying before reaching 1,095 days — IRCC will reject the application.
  • Failing to file Canadian taxes for the required number of years before applying.
  • Confusing OCI card with Indian citizenship — the OCI card does not restore Indian citizenship.
