ACA Marketplace Health Insurance Plans

What Indian immigrants need to know about purchasing health insurance through the ACA marketplace.

Overview

If you do not have access to employer-sponsored insurance, you can purchase individual or family coverage through the government Healthcare Marketplace (ACA/Obamacare plans) at healthcare.gov.

For Indians Moving From India

If you arrive in the U.S. and have a waiting period before your employer insurance begins, you can use the Marketplace to buy short-term coverage. Arriving in the U.S. counts as a qualifying life event triggering a Special Enrollment Period.

For Indians Already in the US

If you lose your job and thereby lose employer insurance, you are eligible for a 60-day Special Enrollment Period to purchase a Marketplace plan. The annual Open Enrollment period runs approximately November 1 to January 15.

Key Information

Plans are categorized into metal tiers — Bronze (low premium, high deductible), Silver, Gold, and Platinum (high premium, low deductible). Most H-1B, L-1, F-1, and similar visa holders are considered lawfully present immigrants and are eligible to purchase Marketplace plans.

Requirements

You must be living in the U.S., be a lawfully present immigrant (H-1B, F-1, L-1, and similar statuses qualify), and not be incarcerated.

Common Mistakes

Missing the 60-day Special Enrollment window after losing a job. If you miss this window, you cannot buy a Marketplace plan until the next general Open Enrollment period.

Practical Tips

Depending on your income level, you may qualify for premium tax credits that significantly reduce monthly costs. Always input your estimated annual income accurately when applying — underestimating can result in repaying credits at tax time.
